The Construction Industry Training Board estimates that over a quarter of a million new workers will be needed in the sector by 2027 to meet demand. Alongside, government and industry sustainability goals, such as the 2050 net zero target, have significant sustainability implications. The industry requires more workers with new skills.
NMITE’s Timber TED courses – delivered in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University and Timber Development UK – offer a vital solution. The courses, with extensive industry endorsement, will provide you with comprehensive and flexible training to upskill and reskill for modern methods of timber construction.
Explore sustainability’s role within climate change and the built environment. Choose from courses focused on timber design, materials, sustainability, technology and construction – all enhanced by cutting-edge online resources and work-based challenges, offering a mix of online and in-person training.
Gain hands-on experience during on-campus training blocks, networking with partners and industry peers. On-campus training takes place at our Centre for Advanced Timber Technology at our award-winning Skylon campus – it exemplifies sustainable timber construction techniques.
NMITE’s Timber TED courses are ideal for individuals and organisations keen on navigating the evolving landscape of climate-conscious construction. Equip yourself with the tools to implement eco-friendly solutions, drive innovation, and meet net-zero goals.

Objectives
Timber Design: An Introduction (TED 1)
Understand the principles of timber design construction and engineering methods in the context of a built environment studio. Create an artefact that responds to a design brief – design a unique timber-to-timber connection that you will create in our workshop.
Timber Sustainability: Globally Responsible Construction (TED 1)
Define and explain sustainability, related to the built environment context, regulations and goals. Identify methods and approaches for evaluating the sustainability of timber construction.
Timber Materials: From Source to Building Solutions (TED 1)
Understand different wood features, mechanical properties, classification systems and the impact of environmental factors on timber. Learn about engineered wood products, their manufacturing processes and applications.
Timber Technology: Design, Engineering and Construction (TED 2)
Identify the technologies used in engineered wood products, connectors, and fixings. Describe how technology is employed to manufacture components, assemblies, and hybrid solutions. Evaluate emerging technologies and their relationship to the built environment.
Timber Construction: Typologies, Techniques and Methodologies (TED 2)
Specify timber construction typologies. Understand modern methods of construction and determine the structural characteristics of contemporary engineered timber products and how they are applied. Learn about safe working practices.
Timber Design: Components, Offsite and Modern Methods of Construction (TED 2)
Build on your existing knowledge timber as a building material, understanding the principles of timber design construction and engineering methods in the context of a built environment studio. Design and create an artefact that responds to a design brief.
Contents
Covering essential areas of sustainable construction, the courses explore timber’s role as a core building material. In TED 1 courses, participants delve into sustainable design principles, timber characteristics, and construction techniques. With three courses spanning design, materials, and sustainability, the curriculum merges cutting-edge online resources and hands-on challenges. TED 2 courses advance understanding of timber applications, construction methods, and technology. A blend of virtual learning and on-campus immersion ensures a comprehensive grasp of sustainable timber design and innovation.
Suitability
This course is for those interested in timber design in the built environment. This could be construction project managers, planners, people working in policy or government, students, architects, architectural technologists, engineers, salespeople, designers, apprentices, and even carpenters who are keen to have a deeper understanding of the subject.
